By supporting Paskaia, you’re directly investing in the transformation of La Mosquitia—helping build a future where communities thrive in a restored landscape, with stable jobs, food on table, and new opportunities for everyone.
We’re reforesting almost 1,600 ha of savannah with over 3 million trees, ultimately sequestering some 400,000 t CO₂. To make that happen, we protect grasslands from the wildfires that sweep through several times a year. When fires are kept at bay, young trees regenerate naturally—and we complement that with enrichment planting.
Fire management is really tough work, so we partner closely with the Miskito people. After decades of watching their forests vanish, the people dreamed of bringing them back. For many, joining Paskaia’s fire brigades has meant their first steady income ever—cutting firebreaks and battling blazes to protect the next generation of forest.
"The trees were so big,
so many that they couldn't even be counted, then the chainsaw came"

How it works

Restoration of Pine Savanna
Over centuries, logging and fires have transformed lush Caribbean pine forests into barren savannas. We train and employ local fire brigades who build firebreaks, prevent wildfires, and protect young forests, securing stable incomes for hundreds of families.

Mahogany and Cedar Plantations
On privately owned and leased farmland, we help local smallholders integrate valuable mahogany and cedar trees into their agricultural practices. This approach boosts family incomes and economic resilience and provides ecological benefits like improved soil health, water retention, and carbon sequestration.

Community-led through Co-design
Paskaia is community-led at its core. Developed together with researchers from universities in Sweden and Australia, our unique co-design approach actively involves the Miskito people at every stage. By ensuring the meaningful participation of women, youth, and marginalized groups, we build stronger, more resilient communities.
